How I Design

Whether I am designing or managing other designers, my process centers on user research, product strategy and experimentation: building small to deliver value quickly while gathering data to inform iteration.

How I Manage

My focus is on effective communication with the people I work with. My approach is to be flexible and tailor my approach to the individual people I work with, how they communicate, work and learn; what they struggle with and what motivates them. 

TRUST AND OWNERSHIP

Empower designers to own their work, both the design process and outcomes. Trust them to make thoughtful product decisions and to ask for help when they need it.

DESIGN IS A TEAM SPORT

Empower designers to own their work, both the design process and outcomes. Involve everyone in discussions about strategy and direction and achieve alignment through dialogue.

I am my team’s biggest fan: I champion their efforts and broadcast their successes; I also strive to provide constructive feedback in a direct, supportive and timely way.

SWEAT THE DIRECTION, THEN THE DETAILS

Before going deep zoom out to frame the problem, understand product strategy and user needs. Use that foundation to sweat the many details that contribute to a great product experience.

MAKE IT SAFE TO TAKE RISKS

Design is about testing hypotheses and failure is a great source of data. I frame design work in this way to encourage experimentation and risk-taking in a safe environment.

FACILITATE GROWTH

Each designer owns their own growth and development. My role is to advise and clarify those goals and help identify opportunitites to achieve them in the work we do.

Hire people who are kind, thoughtful, and collaborative. Build a team with strengths that complement the rest of the team and address core product needs.
